As music has become an integral part of popular culture, it’s no surprise that a major event like the MetGala has become a part of the broader cultural landscape. Since its inception in 1971, the MetGala has been a gathering of the who’s who in music, fashion, and entertainment. It is an annual fundraising event held in New York City, and it features an elite guest list with tickets reaching as high as $30,000.
Come May 1st, 2023, the MetGala will be making history as the first Nigerian music stars to grace the event. Internationally renowned Afrobeat superstars, Burna Boy and Tems, will be invited as guests. Accompanying these two is none other than Tiwa Savage, a well-known vocalist and performer.
However, while she will be present as a performer, both Burna Boy and Tems have been extended the prestigious invitation as regular guests.
The MetGala is the crème de la crème of events in cultural circles, and its tapestry is made up of the wealthiest of the wealthy and most influential people around the world. For two of Nigeria’s most prominent music artists to be invited shows just how prominent the influence of Nigerian music has become over the years.
